Saddlesmith Series Action
The $3,000 Saddlesmith Series Open class at The Tradition in Lexington, Virginia, found Tom McCutcheon back in the winner's circle. This time he was aboard his 2001 NRBC Champion, Smartest Chic Olena, owned by Terry Owens. The duo put together an action packed run that had everyone cheering. They were rewarded with a big score of 220 and a paycheck of $1,594.25. The blaze faced sorrel stallion was slated for USET competition this year, but a big penalty at the Semi-Finals kept him from advancing to the Finals. Since the USET Semi-Finals were held during the NRHA Derby show, McCutcheon took advantage of the opportunity to show the stallion in the Open class. The placed second in the class and then placed second in the next Saddlesmith Series event held in Denver, Colorado. This steady performance has put Smartest Chic Olena a little more than $1,500 behind the Series leader.
