Born to Win!
Vince Lombardi was right. “Winning isn’t everything…it’s the only thing!” It’s what professional competition is all about. Champions understand that it’s not good enough to just participate. They have an innate ability to dominate, demonstrating unique characteristics that enable them to consistently rise above the competition. Champions are born to win. Smartest Chic Olena (Smart Chic Olena x Colonels Dove) established himself as a champion at the highest levels of reining competition. Winning twelve major championships in a four year span, the 1996 sorrel stallion captured the attention of reining enthusiasts worldwide. In 2001, with Tom McCutcheon at the helm, Smartest Chic Olena (aka “Beau) won the National Reining Breeders Classic. That same year, Tom and Beau combined to win the prestigious AQHA All American Congress Junior Reining. The duo followed those performances with the 2002 Saddlesmith Series Open Reining title. In 2003, Tom and Beau swept the USET All Star Series, culminating with a Gold Medal winning performance at the Bayer Festival of Champions in Gladstone, New Jersey. “Beau is a huge stopper with heart and grit,” McCutcheon notes. “That’s what you need to consistently win at this level. I can always count on him to rise to the occasion, regardless of the conditions or the competition. He loves to compete!” Smartest Chic Olena’s greatest challenge is outside of the arena – proving that he is more than a championship performer, he’s also a prodigious sire. Lombardi knew that behind every great champion was someone who believed in them from the day they were born through every competition, feeling every emotion, never wavering in their faith. One encounter with owner Terry Owens clearly establishes her fervor for the stallion she proudly promotes. A tattered cover from a greeting card adorns Owens’ desk at BiTerra Quarter Horses. The message is simple. “To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.” To say that Owens’ believes in Smartest Chic Olena is an understatement. “We are constantly reminded how blessed we are to have experienced a championship show career,” Owens points out. “But our dream is only partially fulfilled. Beau is an amazing horse with incredible athleticism and a huge heart. I know he’s going to pass it along to his offspring.” Talking with Owens it’s easy to be captivated by her commitment to a breeding program that is as impressive as her stallion’s championship performances. Yet, Owens is very realistic about the future. “The show career was like a sprint. It happened so fast. The breeding program is more like a marathon and patience isn’t my strong suit. But, I’m learning that championship breeding programs take both time and money. It’s like a relentless pursuit of excellence, and being relentless is one of my strong suits.” “We’re excited about raising Beau babies,” Owens asserts. The stallion’s first full foal crop enters training in January with an eye toward the 2006 Futurity. “We’re already seeing Beau’s characteristic traits of athleticism, stamina and extraordinary disposition,” Owens notes. Owens is not alone in her praise for Beau’s offspring. “We’re getting calls from mare owners around the world lauding the quality of their Smartest Chic Olena offspring. “It’s so gratifying to talk to our customers and hear their praise for Beau’s progeny. But, the true test is in how well they will train and ride. It’s like being in the Open Finals, but the announcer takes three years (instead of three seconds) to announce the score.” If belief and desire are the magic ingredients that translate dreams into reality, Smartest Chic Olena will be a successful sire. Owens has high hopes for her stallion. “I want Beau to be the next million dollar sire.” Looking deep into the soft eye of the stately stallion you somehow know he senses the challenge, running into the greatest arena of his career knowing he was born to win!
