Relentless Pursuit of a Dream
For a champion, winning is much more than an event. It’s a tradition. Champions consistently display a pattern of success that overcomes all obstacles and commands attention. Champions enter the arena with increasing expectations and consistently return to the winner’s circle. Over the past three years, Smartest Chic Olena (Smart Chic Olena x Colonels Dove) has proven himself at the highest levels of competition. And the championship dream is only beginning. Trainer Tom McCutcheon knows Smartest Chic Olena (aka “Beau”) better than anyone. Since taking over the reins of the seven year old stallion early in 2001, the duo have won over $100,000 together. Smartest Chic Olena and McCutcheon have won ten major events from 2001 through 2003, including the Open championship at the 2001 National Reining Breeders Classic, 2001 AQHA Congress Junior Reining and the 2002 Saddlesmith Series. This year Smartest Chic Olena and McCutcheon swept the USET winning the All Star Series at Houston and Kansas City and the prestigious Gold Medal at the Gladstone Festival of Champions. “This is a perfect ending to a year where we were unbeaten,” noted McCutcheon. “Beau is one of the easiest horses I have ever ridden to get ready for a show, regardless of the conditions. He consistently carries me to the winner’s circle.” And the conditions at this year’s USET Championship could not have been worse. Gladstone had seen only five days of sunshine in the last two months when the Open Reining Championship commenced. The rain and muddy conditions did not hinder Smartest Chic Olena from demonstrating his trademark athleticism and dynamic stops. According to McCutcheon, “Beau is a huge stopper with heart and grit. That’s what you need to consistently win at this level of competition. I can always count on him to rise to the occasion. He loves to compete!” The USET Gold Medal is the culmination of a great show career where Smartest Chic Olena compiled 12 championships and over $115,000 in lifetime earnings. This places him among the top five offspring of $2 million sire, Smart Chic Olena and as the leading Smart Chic Olena money earner to compete solely in reining. Smartest Chic Olena is a study in opposites. His quiet disposition outside of the show pen is in stark contrast to his commanding athleticism in competition. His powerful sliding stops have been a competitive advantage and a signature that reining enthusiasts have applauded throughout the country. Owner, Terry Owens purchased the flashy stallion after the 1999 Futurity where he was an Intermediate Open Finalist. Terry, and husband Bill Peel, founded BiTerra Quarter Horses (Weimar, Texas) to promote the stallion and expand their reining interests. As Owens is quick to point out, “we’re excited about raising Beau Babies. Smartest Chic Olena has proven himself as a great performer. The next challenge is to see if he can be an equally impressive sire.” To accomplish this, BiTerra has purchased some of the top mares in Reining including Silversnow Pinestep aka “Cow Patty” dam of Einstein. A clipped cover from a greeting card is prominently displayed on Owens’ desk. . “To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan but also believe.” It is a stable prompt of the vision she has for her star stallion. “We are constantly reminded how blessed we are to have experienced success after such a short period of time.” Tom McCutcheon has a great saying, “You’re win only lasts until the next show.” Tom’s right. Smartest Chic Olena is currently standing at Alpha Equine in Granbury, Texas. “Our relationship with Alpha has been extraordinary,” Owens noted. The Alpha partnership precipitated an opportunity for Smartest Chic Olena to be selected as a participant in the Million Dollar Stallion Parade at the National Cutting Horse Associaton Futurity on December 13th in Fort Worth, Texas. This is a landmark position among the top performance horse stallions in the country. If desire and determination are the ingredients that translate dreams into reality, don’t count Owens out. She’s a dreamer who believes in her stallion and his promising future. “The show career was like a sprint. It happened so fast. And, the breeding program is more like a marathon. Patience isn’t my strong suit, but determination is. Lots of our friends call me relentless. I take that as a compliment. Owens has high hopes for her super stallion. “I want Smartest Chic Olena to be the next $1 million sire,” she said. “Well $1 million, then $2 million, then $3 million.” For more detailed information on Smartest Chic Olena check out the stallion’s website at www.smartestchicolena.com or contact BiTerra Quarter Horses (979-263-5997 or terryo@smartestchicolena.com)
